Director of Photography is SP-3 Gerald Finnerman of the Army Pictorial Center in Long Island City, and experienced and qualified cameraman from Warner Brothers Studio in Hollywood. Through his eyes and the lens of THE BIG PICTURE camera, TV viewers will follow the training and actual underwater operations assigned to enlisted divers of the Army Transportation Corps. The diving student learns and becomes a jack-of-all-trades: welder, carpenter, mechanic all rolled into one. He must also be an explosives expert; at home with such items as blasting machines, plastic explosives gelatin dynamite and TNT. Playing down the dramatics usually seen in underwater work, the skillful photography by Finnerman results in a documentary featuring generous use of all camera angles. It takes 17 weeks in the Divers' School for young soldiers who had never been under the water to become qualified salvage divers and fledgling members of one of the highest paid trades in the world.

Fort McMurray's gangs and organized crime will soon face a formidable foe. The Wood Buffalo RCMP detachment in Timberlea will be home to the recently announced serious and organized crime unit through the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams. "ALERT is an integrated policing model that is strongly supported by the government, as well as all the partner agencies and ALERT is made up of RCMP personnel and members of various municipal police services," said Insp. Bob Simmonds, who is in charge of the Fort McMurray enforcement team. ALERT was started by the Alberta government in 2006 with the aim to investigate and take down serious criminal activity like drug trafficking networks, marijuana grow operations, street-level gang activity and larger organized crime groups. Fort McMurray has faced a number of what RCMP deem "drug-related" crimes. In February, there was a double homicide which saw two men gunned down in a Haineault Street apartment — while the men were "known to police," it has not been confirmed as a drug crime, but it's proof enough of the problems in town. "It's pretty obvious when you're having double homicides and serious assaults that there are causes to those types of activities (and) situations, and we're hoping and expecting obviously that once we're underway that these types of activities hopefully are going to be reduced and perhaps even eliminated," Simmonds said. This is a video I made for a social inequality class a few years ago. I apologize for the sound quality. I also need to mention that the reference to Jamaican farmers is my attempt to highlight the similarities between truck drivers in the United States and small farmers/business owners/ workers all over the world. Truck drivers were once protected by a regulatory structure that prevented destructive competition (from 1934 to 1980 the Motor Carrier Act did this) and Jamaican farmers were also once protected by regulations that prevented destructive competition (tariffs). Both groups now stand unprotected in the global economy and, unlike Jamaican farmers/workers no documentary has been made about the hardships of truck drivers in the US. Given the economic and cultural significance of truck drivers I find this hard to believe! Statistical evidence indicates that OTR truck drivers, who were once among the highest paid blue collar workers in the nation, have not had a "real wage" (wages adjusted for inflation) increase since 1974 and that working conditions continue to decline. As the pay structure stagnates or declines, state and corporate interference is on the increase for drivers. More and more transport companies use electronic/satellite surveillance devices in trucks to monitor drivers and DOT enforcement is on the rise.
